Last weekend saw Sebastian Vettel claim his second successive Formula One World Drivers Title as he placed third at the Japanese Grand Prix behind Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso. This race is the 16th of the season and all previous 15 pole positions have been taken by the Red Bull cars, with Vettel taking 12 to Mark Webber’s three. These two drivers lined up first and second on the grid at this Grand Prix last season and they will be looking for another similar performance this time around.
Unfortunately for Webber, at least, this will not be happening. There are three teams at the top of their game at the moment, with Red Bull and McLaren the big contenders during qualifying and Ferrari managing to come on strong during the race. Webber has not performed well in recent races, but with the pressure off everyone now that Vettel has clinched the drivers title he may start to put in some better performances. We are not sure that this will happen though, and we feel that pole position will be contested between Vettel and the two McLaren drivers of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.
Both the McLaren drivers could, and should, have ended the season long lockout of first place on the grid by Red Bull at the last race, but Hamilton was impeded by Webber and Michael Schumacher and failed to reach the start/finish line before the session was completed, while Button made a tiny error and was beaten to pole by 0.009 seconds. However, Button showed his ability in the race to record a fine victory while Hamilton’s poor luck continued with a puncture.
However, over one lap, Vettel seems to have the rub of the green that allows him to dominate races from Saturday afternoon onwards and despite their being no upgrades or changes to the car happening in the week between the Japanese Grand Prix and this race, we can see Vettel taking another pole position. We do expect the McLaren drivers to push him hard though and we would not be surprised to see Vettel, Button and Hamilton line up one, two and three on the grid.
Betting Tips Recommendation:
Our money is on Sebastian Vettel to take pole @ 1.80 and Jenson Button to take pole position each way @ 4.50 (each way section pays @ 1.70) with Bet365.com.
