Run the Bases – Thursday, Aug. 26

Yesterday’s afternoon card had ‘disaster’ written all over it. Fans in Atlanta, not to mention all the bettors across the land that had booked the Braves to salvage a win from their trek up to Mile High Mountain, were already tasting sweet victory by the third inning.

Up 10-1 with a starter who had not given up more than three earned runs in his past four outings, it’s fairly safe to assume that a first place team will do whatever it takes to hold on for the win.

That’s where the disaster comes in.

First pitch was thrown out just after 1 pm local time. In the east that’s getting pretty close to happy hour at most pubs and when you’ve gone large and your team goes up by nine, all of a sudden the drinks start flowing a little easier.

A round for your friends, one for the table of hotties on the patio and a couple of appy platters later, the tab that was coming out of your “winnings” is big enough to pay rent for the month.

We all know how it finished, but hopefully anyone that chased used our play on the Cubs to beat Washington.

KICK `EM WHEN THEY’RE DOWN
We explained a profitable angle for betting on ‘sweep’ situations in yesterday’s piece and banked a profit with Chicago as they wrapped up their series in style. Today’s light card features another pair of teams looking to keep the steak alive and we like both spots.

The Padres have no quams over kicking a defenseless opponent (or umpire)

Arizona at San Diego (-165): The Diamondbacks offense has vanished the past few days and that’s not exactly what you want when facing the third-highest scoring team in the majors since Aug. 1st. Eight-straight wins by the Padres have come by two-plus runs and at this line we recommend playing the run line for a positive payback. This game starts at 6:35 pm ET. View expanded game report
BetRepublic.com Pick: Take the Padres -1.5 (+130)

Oakland (-120) at Cleveland:
The Indians have won just one series this month and last night’s loss stretched their current losing skid to five games. A’s pitcher Victor Mazzaro has a 2.13 ERA in his last four starts and other than Texas (July 29), not one American League home team has scored more than three earned runs against the 23-year-old this year. IF IT LOOKS LIKE AN UNDER

Oddsmakers rarely make mistakes and when the line was posted for game 1 between the Tigers and Blue Jays (-140, O/U 7.5), online sportsbooks were expecting fairly balanced action between the over and under. It hasn’t really worked out that way, as 74-percent money seems to favoring a low scoring game.

We’re riding with the public on this one as Detroit brings one of the top starters in the AL this month into Homerville looking for his third straight win. Max Scherzer (9-9, 3.73 ERA) has struggled on the road this but he was nothing short of brilliant his last two outings, one of which was at Yankee Stadium.

Ricky Romero (10-7, 3.50 ERA)
has been money at home, going 5-2 with 2.62 ERA and we see the pitchers overshadowing the hitters in tonight’s contest. View expanded game report
