Ice Box (9/5), who made a name at the Kentucky Derby in May, continues to attract heavy support but recent history has proven that a good finish in either of the top two legs of the Triple Crown can mean very little at Belmont Park.
The course, located in Elmont, New York is 1 and ½ miles (2.41 kms), roughly 20-percent longer than the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Thus, the list of entries is smaller and bettors that watched the first two races will not recognize a few of the names.
First Dude (13/4) and Fly Down (9/2) are next on the list of favorites and will start 10 and 11 at the post.
Two-time winner at Belmont Nick Zito is the trainer for both Ice Box and Fly Down so it’s not surprising to see either of these horses attracting attention. Fly Down also won the Dwyer at Belmont with an explosive move and while it could be hard to repeat, all this colt does is win. Jockey John Velazquez is also a proven winner that rode Rags to Riches to the wire in 2007.
Stately Victor (8/1), Game On Dude (17/9), Uptowncharlybrown (9/1) and Make Music for Me (9/1) are listed fourth through seventh.
Stately Victor opened at 15-to-1, while odds on the 5-to-7 horses have held steady.
Make Music for Me will be ridden by Belmont newcomer Joel Rosario. Music’s trainer, Alexis Barba, is attempting to become the first female trainer to win the Belmont and after a fourth place finish at the shorter Churchill Downs track, some feel this horse is made for distance.
Calvin Borel has the rail and will ride Dave in the Dixie at 16-to-1. Bettors should note that this horse opened at 20-to-1 and it is the jockey rather than the horse pulling this price down.
Last year at Belmont following his final pre-race workout with Mine That Bird Borel called his shot, guaranteeing victory in the race before finishing third. This year Borel is being a little more cautious with his predictions but you never know. In Dixie’s last start at the Illinois Derby the colt finished fifth and in three years it has yet to win a race.
