This year’s British Grand Prix was meant to be held at Donington Park, however due to a lack of finance this has not happened. As a result Silverstone were able to get the rights to hold the British Grand Prix for another seventeen years, but they were forced to upgrade the track due to safety concerns for the MotoGP event that has been switched to Silverstone from the now defunct Donington Park circuit. Almost half a mile has been added to the track and the new Arena section of the circuit will increase the overall speed of the track.

Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull won the 2009 running of the British Grand Prix, leading from pole to flag, in a dominate performance. Red Bull are still the car to beat when it comes to speed over one lap and with the changes to the Silverstone circuit they will be looking to capture their ninth pole position from this year’s ten races. Will they be able to do so? I feel that will be up there with the McLaren’s battling for the top spot on the grid, and the Red Bull cars will have the edge the British based McLaren squad with it’s two British drivers. Of the two Red Bull drivers Vettel will be in the happier mood after his win in Valencia, whereas his team-mate, Mark Webber, retired after a massive accident with the Lotus of Heikki Kovalainen. As a result of this, my money will be on Vettel to start this race from pole position at odds of 13/8.

However, can the young German lead from pole to chequered flag for a second year running? As I said above I feel that this weekend will be another fight between the two form teams at the moment in Red Bull and McLaren. McLaren are introducing a raft of upgrades to their cars this weekend and have the benefit of the best performing F-duct on the grid, both of which will help them in the fight against the Red Bull drivers of Vettel and Webber. Both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button in the McLaren cars will both be highly motivated to win their home grand prix after having poor races in 2009 with Hamilton finishing a lowly 16th after winning the race in 2008 and Button finishing forty-six seconds behind race winner Vettel. Can they do it? Should their upgrades work as expected I feel that one of the drivers will win the race, with a good chance of them finishing 1-2 (the odds for a McLaren 1-2 are 7/1 if you wish to back this outcome), and I feel that backing a McLaren driver or a British driver to win the race is the way to go. Both are available at odds of 13/8.

As always, I’ll be offering my thoughts on where the value lies for a podium placing and points finishing bet. With regards to where the value lies for a top three placing, as the Red Bull drivers and Lewis Hamilton are available at less than evens odds while Fernando Alonso is available at evens to finish in the top three. This leaves Jenson Button, who I expect to have an excellent weekend available at 6/4 to stand on the podium at the end of the race in his home country. With the new upgrades on the car this weekend I feel that the McLaren will be up there for the race win so to have odds of 6/4 to finish in the top three, Button to finish in the top three is probably my bet of the weekend.

In the ‘who will finish in the top six’ market, the top seven drivers are available at worse than evens odds. The bookmakers have finally caught on to how good my favourite for this market, Robert Kubica, has been this year. He has finished in the points in eight of the nine races so far, and he has finished in the top six in six of the those eight races. He is available at odds of 1/2 this weekend for a top six finish. I wouldn’t normally recommend backing someone at such short odds, but as Kubica has made me such a large amount of money this year on this market i’m going to keep faith in the Polish driver this weekend and back him at double my usual stake as a result of his short odds.

Enjoy the race and best of luck with your betting. Should you wish to check out more betting markets throughout the weekend please visit the BetRepublic.com Formula One Stadium where i’ll be posting my favourite matchup, special and other bets all weekend long.
