Last time out in Turkey we saw some unbelievable scenes as the Red Bull cars self destructed under pressure from Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. Following that incident, one that could define Red Bull’s season, the McLaren cars showed the Red Bull team how team-mates should battle for places with an astounding half lap battle. Will the fact that the McLaren’s emerged unscathed and finished 1-2 in Turkey after running toe-to-toe with the Red Bulls in Turkey give them the physiological advantage in Canada this weekend?

Clearly the fact that McLaren were able to run with the Red Bull cars in Turkey show that they have improved their car to the point that they were equal with the fastest car on the track, if not faster. This, coupled with the fact that they have the F-Duct to use on the long straights of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, makes me believe that it will be one of the McLaren drivers that will be standing on the top of the podium at the end of the race. However, the Canadian Grand Prix has a long and notorious history of been completely unpredictable, so it could be either Button or Hamilton that wins the race so I’m going to split my stakes on Hamilton @ 5/2 and Button @ 11/2 for the race winner.

Despite the McLaren cars being the fastest over a race distance, I’m not sure that they have matched the pace of the Red Bull cars over one lap yet. They are close, and they may have pulled level come Saturday afternoon in Canada, but I feel that Red Bull still have a slight edge and that either Vettel or Webber will start from pole position. After the incident in Turkey both drivers will want to show their superiority over the other by claiming pole position but it will be Webber who takes the top spot as he is in better form and does not seem to be as affected by things as his team-mate. My money is on Mark Webber to take pole position at 3/1.

As with all my Grand Prix previews I’ll be deciding on who will be finishing on the podium as well as finishing in the top six places. As I feel that this race will be a McLaren dominated event I’m plumping for Button on the podium as William Hill feel that he will finish last of the McLaren and Red Bull cars by offering odds of 11/10 on him to have a top three finish while Hamilton, Vettel and Webber are all less than evens.

William Hill are also covering their bases on the top six finisher market, with nine drivers available at less than evens odds! I am picking one of these nine to finish in the top six and it’s the surprise of the season – Robert Kubica in the Renault. Bar the first race of the season in Bahrain, Kubica has scored points in every race with five of those six finishes being in the top six and two of those podium placings. Kubica has also recorded his only ever Formula One race win in the streets of Montreal with his 2008 victory. This banished the memory of the worst crash of his career which happened the year before (if you haven’t seen it check out YouTube – it shows how safety has improved over the last fifteen years in F1). He clearly loves the circuit and is showing the kind of form to get himself another good points finish at this race. My money is on him to do so at odds of 8/11.
