NBA
With Sunday night’s victory, the Boston Celtics took a three-games-to-two lead, putting them one away from taking the title. Unlike playoffs, the championship series is 2-3-2, meaning the Lakers get the next two at home and don’t have to return to Boston.
Next game is on Tuesday: Lakers – 6 1/2, 187 1/2
The favorite in this series is 3-2 ATS. Game six favorite LA is just 1-1 ATS, and 6-4 overall this post season as home favorites.
The total for game six is the lowest yet in the series at 187 1/2.
Three of five have stayed under the total, one went over, one went either way depending on what number players got. Three of the five final scores stayed under the total for this Tuesday’s game.
The LA loss isn’t hard to analyze – Kobe got zero support. He was 13-27 on FG’s, and 4-0 on three-pointers, yet, as a whole, LA shot just 39%.
The ‘07/08 series ended in six games after a Boston win. That game took place in Boston though – the infamous 39 point LA loss. The current Laker players that participated in that game have talked about the hurt and humiliation they felt after the final buzzer, watching the Boston fans explode in celebration. That will be on their minds as they again enter game six facing elimination, and the humiliation they felt in ‘07/08 will be nothing compared to what they will experience if they lose in front of their home fans.
MLB
The Yankees continue to perform well in the role of -180 or higher favorites, as they swept Houston and were big money chalk in all three games. They are now 20-5 in that role. They also took two of three on the run line and are now 19-6 in that situation.
We have a short, four game card today with no significant match-ups.
Soccer
After playing to a tie with England, next up for the US is Slovenia on Friday, June 18. The US is the favorite to win the match. Current odds are:
USA +100
Slovenia +275
Draw +230
Today’s match-up features Cameroon versus Japan, and Italy vs. Paraguay.
Streak Players Alert:
The Pirates have lost eight straight.
The Orioles have lost three straight.
BAD BEAT of the weekend: It was a tough trip for any anglers who went Marlin fishing down in Tampa last weekend. The Fish took two of three games from the Rays, and Tampa Bay backers dropped -180 on the Friday loss and -200 on Sunday’s.
Of course, THE Bad Beat of the weekend, and most likely the entire tournament, goes to all the punters who backed merry old England in their Saturday game against the US, when former goalie (and possibly former resident of England) Green allowed what has been described as the softest goal in the history of the World Cup. On the bright side, Green can cheer himself up with this bit of convenient geography – at least he doesn’t play for Columbia.
