Serena Williams v Vera Zvonareva:

This match is a tale of opposites as Serena Williams has reached her sixteenth Grand Slam final (winning twelve of the previous fifteen appearances!) while this is Zvonareva’s first final appearance in her thirtieth Grand Slam tournament. Serena Williams is on fire at Wimbledon this year, having reached the final without dropping a set. On route to this point she has had an easy enough time of things, with only Maria Sharapova causing any real difficulty as Serena won 7-6, 6-4. After that she defeated Na Li in the Semi Finals 7-5, 6-3 before beating Petra Kvitova in the Semi Finals after a slow start. The final score was 7-6, 6-2 despite Kvitova leading 4-2 at one stage in the first set. Serena has shown some excellent play this week, now can she finish off the tournament in style?

Zvonareva will be looking to upset the odds and claim her first Grand Slam title. The twenty-first seed has dropped just two sets, with both of those coming in the Quarter and Semi Finals against Kim Clijsters and shock semi finalist Tsvetana Pironkova. However, this hasn’t fazed the Russian and she has shown as she lost the first set in both of those games to come back and win. Can she take the heart she has shown in her comebacks into the final and upset the odds?

These two players have met on six occasions, and Serena leads the scorecard 5-1. They have not met each other since 2008 and they have never played each other on grass. Serena’s only loss came in 2006 and she will be confident of taking another win. I feel the same way as Serena and I’m sure that she’ll win this one, however a win at 1/7 doesn’t hold much value. As a result I’m going to back Serena to drop her first set of the tournament as she has had a 7-5 or 7-6 set in her last four matches and should it happen again I see Zvonareva taking advantage. My money is on Serena to win 2-1 @7/2 with William Hill.
