NHL » Five-game NHL Wednesday Preview

Written by: Jarvis | 03 February 2010 | 123 views

One game doesn’t tell the whole story but the Maple Leafs were feeling pretty good about their recent dealings with the Flames Tuesday in a 3-0 win over the New Jersey Devils. Calgary was blanked 3-0 by Philly in their first outing without Dion Phaneuf in the lineup and tonight newcomers Matt Stajan and Nik Hagman look to make a better impression vs. the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Canes became Edmonton’s first victim of 2010 (finally) in a 4-2 loss Monday but before that had averaged 4.5 goals per game in the previous four outings. Calgary (-170) has scored more than five goals just once since November – a 30-game stretch – and it was against the last place Oilers so if Carolina can get its offense back in gear the Flames will be in trouble.

Ottawa visits a Buffalo (-140) team that was also in a bit of a scoring drought until a trip to Pittsburgh earlier this week. Four goals were still not enough to keep up with Sid the Kid’s offense and now a Senators team riding a nine-game win streak overall looks to make it eight-straight wins over their division rival.

Ryan Miller will start for the Sabres against Brian Elliot, who’s numbers during the current run speak for themselves. Elliot has a 1.14 GAA and .960 save percentage in his last seven starts including one shutout. Ottawa has not allowed more than two goals once in the past nine, holding six teams to one or less.

St. Louis is at Chicago (-260) while Philadelphia (-200) looks for a provincial sweep in Edmonton. The Flyers saw what happened to Carolina vs. Oilers meaning they are not likely to look past this matchup plus Philly was slapped around by Toronto on a recent trip and HC Laviolette has preached better focus away from the Wachovia.

Detroit vs. Anaheim (-140) rounds out the card and Greg Dempson offers a NHL betting system pointing at this game staying below the total. It involves teams off a blowout win like the one the Ducks had in Florida in the final game of their recent six-game tour and the system is 25-12 (68-percent) this season when betting the "Under" 5.5 goals.

The Wings won at San Jose last night but it was far from easy and we are looking for this game between two worn out teams to be a low scoring affair.
